Amateur astronomers, NASA, and the Kepler space telescope are all responsible for locating 42 new alien planets, a few like Earth with 20 in the habitable zone around their parent star. So it’s apparent that we are likely not alone in the Milky Way Galaxy after all.

NASA recently released some great news when it comes to the discovery of another planet just like Earth. With the help of amateur astronomers and the Kepler Satellite, they have found 42 alien planets, 20 of which are in the habitable zone for life, and one could have a moon like the planet Pandora in the movie Avatar.

A team of amateurs has discovered evidence for 42 alien planets, including a Jupiter-size world that could potentially be habitable, by sifting through data from a NASA spacecraft.

Forty volunteers with the crowd-sourcing Planet Hunters project discovered the new planet candidates, which include 15 potentially habitable worlds and PH2 b, a Jupiter-size planet that the team confirmed to be in the habitable zone of its parent star.

This is the second time Planet Hunters project, which is overseen by Zooniverse, has confirmed a new exoplanet discovery. What’s more, several candidate planets found by the project may be in the habitable zones of their parent stars. These candidates are awaiting confirmation by professional astronomers.

Researchers suggested this bonanza of planets in the so-called Goldilocks zone around a star, a habitable zone in which conditions are liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface and potentially supportlife, could mean there is a “traffic jam” of worlds where life could exist, project officials said.

“These are planet candidates that slipped through the net, being missed by professional astronomers and rescued by volunteers in front of their web browsers,” said the University of Oxford’s Chris Lintott, who helms the Zooniverse, in a statement. “It’s remarkable to think that absolutely anyone can discover a planet.”

Life on an ‘Avatar’-like moon

The planet PH2 b was found using data from NASA’s prolific Kepler Space Telescope and confirmed with 99.9 percent confidence by observations at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii.

Ph2 b is considered much too large to host life. However, any moons orbiting the planet could be strong candidates, astronomers said. The atmospheric temperature on the planet would range between 86 and minus 126 degrees Fahrenheit (30 and minus 88 degrees Celsius) in the habitable zone.

“Any moon around this newly discovered, Jupiter-sized planet might be habitable,” stated Ji Wang, a postdoctoral researcher at Yale University. He is lead author of a paper about the discoveries, which has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal and is available on the pre-publishing website Arxiv.

If a theoretical moon were to host life, it would likely have a rocky core, plus a greenhouse atmosphere of some sort that could have liquid water on its surface, the researchers said.

“It’s very similar to what was depicted in the movie ‘Avatar’ — the habitable moon Pandora around a giant planet, Polyphemus,” Wang added.

A telltale dim

Volunteers spotted PH2 b by watching its parent star. As the planet passed in front of the star, the apparent brightness from Earth dimmed.

This is one of two commonly used techniques for finding exoplanets; the other is looking for wobbles in a star’s gravityas a planet speeds around it.

Excluding PH2 b, citizen scientists recently discovered 42 planetary candidates, with 20 of those likely in their respective stars’ habitable regions.

“These detections nearly double the number of gas giant planet candidates orbiting at habitable zone distances,” the paper stated.

Planet Hunters includes participation from Oxford, Yale and several other institutions. Volunteers pour over data from Kepler. Once the strongest candidates are identified, professional astronomers take a look at them.

Planet Hunters has found 48 candidate planets so far. The first confirmed planet, PH1, was revealed in October 2011.

The first Earth like alien planet will be located in 2013 according to astronomers across the globe and even some NASA officials. The discovery of another Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy, orbiting a local star would change mankind and human history forever.

NASA launched their Kepler space telescope back in 2009 with a mission of searching for exoplanets orbiting other stars on our galaxy. As of this moment, there are a few planets astronomers believe could be very similar to Earth and would be great places to harbor alien life, whether it be primal or intelligent. The discovery of such a planet would change religions, change our beliefs, and would be an amazing moment in history as we would know that every time we gazed up at the stars, into the vast universe. We knew there something out there, looking back at us.

Talking to aliens, and potentially making first contact, could actually be illegal. This all started back when Professor Brian Cox attempted to aim a radio telescope at an outer planet to test the theory of contacting aliens and eavesdropping on them. Now even though this event occurred back in January of 2012, BBC Radio is still debating on what the policies should be in the event that extra-terrestrials are contacted. Many believe this type of event could potentially cause harm to the human race while others invite first contact with open arms. Now its being debated within many media companies as to how we should handle this situation, ultimately though, this decision will surely find itself in the United Nations once first contact actually occurs.

Penn State Professors are going to spend the next couple years looking for Dyson Spheres. Basically massive balls in space that aliens would use to gather solar energy. The only problem with this premise is that there is no proof whether or not these things exist. It’s all a mere fabrication, and in my eyes, a waste of time and money. Now in regards to real technology, Natcore Technology is making some real progress. They have created the world’s first Black Silico Cell capable to transferring almost 100% of all solar energy absorbed into usable electricity. Many are viewing this as the first commercially viable solution to alternative energy for the future.

Voyager 1, the satellite that was launched over 30 years ago has now stepped into the history books as the first man made object to leave our solar system and enter intersteller space travel. Currently Voyager 1 is headed for a nearby star and will arrive there in about 40,000 years. It’s unknown as to what, or who, we will/could find but many are hoping that at some point in the distant future. The satellite will make contact with an alien race which will then prompt them to contact us back. Scientists placed a golden disc within the satellite which on one-side houses a record of sounds of the Earth including a song that is meant to share the human emotion of loneliness. The other side houses a star map in an attempt to help the alien race to locate us.

Welcome to “Weird News,” the show where I cover some of the weirdest and idiotic stories from the past week. Today’s show sees a naked man attempt to flea police after telling them he had a nuclear bomb and we cover strange explosion-sounds that occurred in Wisconsin.
